How about we start with Mickey!

Welcome to the Why Not DIY blog! My name is Brandi, and I am here to guide through the DIY world. If you’re asking “who is Brandi?” go over to the Meet Brandi page! You will learn that I am a new mother of a baby boy, Blake.

The dessert table at Blake’s baby shower was beautifully decorated (also a DIY but digress) with white wooden letters that spelled out his name. When I saw that I instantly thought “I’m going to paint those for his room”.

Look at that belly!!! Oh yea I wanted you to check out the wooden letters. So these letters were free for me but you can find them for an inexpensive price on Amazon (MY FAVORITE, more or that in a later post), JoAnn, Michaels, Hobby Lobby or any local craft store. They come in many different shapes and sizes, it’s up to you.

So when go to purchase your letters you will need to pick up a few more supplies then we can get to work:

  • painter’s tape
  • sponge paint brushes
  • white buttons
  • red, black, and yellow acrylic paint
  • a hot glue gun/glue sticks or E6000
  • newspaper or anything to protect your surfaces
  • gloves (optional, the paint is washable but if you don’t want to mess up your manicure grab a pair!)

If your anything like me at this point you’re itching to get started, so let’s do that. Disclaimer: I made my letters before I ever thought about creating this blog. I was able to capture a few picture during the process. Had I know I was going to be doing this, I promise you I would have taken better pictures. If you stick around I promise it will get better. Second disclaimer: I was a very pregnant woman when I did this. (I probably should have been sitting with my feet up but that’s no fun. For your enjoyment I will provide a picture of me the day before I painted the letters (shout out to iPhone for time stamping everything!) My mother-in-law made me get in the motorized cart. So i was very pregnant (just a about two weeks before my due date).

Ok, seriously we can get started:

  1. You want to lay the newspaper down on a flat surface that you will be using.
  2. Start by arranging the letter next to one another, how they will be displayed.
  3. You will need to find the half way point down the height (up and down) of the letter. Take the painter’s tape to mark that point.
  4. You can choose one letter in the name that will have Mickey’s infamous yellow shoes. Or you can choose add the “shoes” to each letter should you choose. Who gone check you boo! Any who, you will need to section off the bottom portion with the painter’s tape
  5. When doing any color blocking or if you’re using two different colors you always want to start with the lightest color because it’s easier to paint over a light color with a dark color. With that being said, take your sponge brush and the yellow paint and paint the bottom portion. NOTE: you will need to let the paint dry before moving to next color because you will need to readjust the tape and you don’t want all of your hard work peeling  off with the removal of the tape. I ended up painting  two coats of each colors. You can chose to do one coat, two coat, heck even five coats if you choose. I found two was enough for me.
  6. Only on the letters that have the yellow shoes, in case you missed it above let the paint dry first, add a strip of tape over the yellow to protect that area from the red (oooh red) paint.
  7. It’s time to throw on that beautiful vibrant red paint. Can you guess what my favorite might be!?!? Third disclaimer: in the pictures below I had to learn the hard way, I did my colors out of order. But you will get the gist of what I was doing. IMG_1663
  8. If you haven’t guessed it yet, it’s now time for the black paint, after you let the red paint fully dry add a strip of tape over the red area, just like we did for the yellow paint.                                                                                         IMG_1664
  9. Once the paint is dry you can remove all of your tape. You may notice that  you maybe have missed some areas where the tape was, in the word of French Montana DON’T PANIC. (click the link if you don’t get the reference). Take your small thin paint brush to touch up any areas you may have missed.
  10. You’re almost finished…take two buttons of equal sizes, add a small dot of the glue of liking, place them firmly in the middle of the letter where the black paint meets the red paint.
  11. Have a glass of wine to celebrate a job well done!
  12. Oh yea…don’t forget to take a picture so you can post your work on your Instagram page. Don’t forget to hashtag that puppy #whynotdiy  and tag me @whynotdiydiy (shameless plug).
  13. Now have a second glass of wine for doing such a great job posting and tagging!
